Friends of Marty, Inc. Raises $10,000 For Students at Morris Catholic High School and St. Peter’s University

BOONTON, NJ – Friends of Marty, Inc. held its 12th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, October 7th, at Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg, N.J. The event, which drew over 100 participants, raised more than $10,000 that will benefit student-athletes at Morris Catholic High School and Saint Peter’s University.

Friends of Marty, Inc. was formed to honor Marty Boryczewski, a former student-athlete and graduate of both Morris Catholic and Saint Peter’s, who was killed in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Each year since, friends and family have gathered in the fall to hold the golf tournament and remember Marty.

“I can’t express how pleased I was with the turnout this year. Each year gives us the opportunity to introduce our Charity and cause to so many new people. I am proud to say that our annual event continues to be a huge success,” said Ron Dollard, President of Friends of Marty, Inc.

A two-year scholarship was awarded last fall to Sarah Shirkey, now a senior who has played soccer, basketball and lacrosse at Morris Catholic. Shirkey was recognized formally at last year’s event where she spoke about her love for Morris Catholic, sports, academics and the spirit of Marty.

“Sarah Shirkey is truly a special young lady. She has demonstrated all the attributes we look for in a candidate for the scholarship. Her dynamic personality and willingness to help out and go above and beyond is just a small part of who she is. She has been a champion of our cause and has helped expand our presence throughout the Morris Catholic community and beyond.” said Dollard.

Over the last six years, more than $30,000 in scholarships has been awarded to student-athletes at Morris Catholic. Dollard also announced that Friends of Marty, Inc. would begin to award scholarships to student-athletes at Saint Peter’s University, beginning in 2014-15.

“Once again, I am in awe of the Friends of Marty Annual Golf Outing, who they are, what they do, and their very generous supporters,” said Marty’s sister Julie Boryczewski. “This year’s outing proved to be another huge success for a Morris Catholic student and now, with the addition of a scholarship at St. Peter’s, another child’s education dream will be realized. Each year this group honors my brother’s memory with such dignity and grace. My family and I are grateful and blessed with how beautifully his memory is kept alive. We are thankful that so many people will know and remember Marty and who he was.”
